Color has a striking effect on people. Hair color also makes a difference to a person’s appearance. Melanocytes are the pigments that determine the color of hair. How do the hair colors work? It is because of a chemical reaction between the chemicals present in the hair colors and the pigments in the hair. It must be remembered that certain of the reactions are irreversible and if caution is not exercised, it may result in not so pleasant to see color. Hence, it is better to be careful.
There are levels of hair color which indicate the intensity of lightness or darkness of hair. The darker is the hair, the lower is the level. Thus, black hair is level 1 and blonde hair is level 11. Identify the level of your hair color, take into account your natural skin tone and the color of your eyes and select a color that will go with the rest and improve the color tone. Here are the different levels:
- Black
- Very dark brown
- Dark brown
- Medium brown
- Light brown
- Dark blonde
- Light blonde
- Very light blonde
- Light platinum blonde
There are two types of hair dyes-permanent and semi-permanent, with variations in each category.
Permanent Colors: They must be mixed with hydrogen peroxide to heighten hair color. The peroxide opens the cuticle to ensure that the tint can penetrate the cortex and form the color. Peroxide level decides the outcome. The greater the level of peroxide, the quicker and lighter the result.
Semi-Permanent dyes: These are prepared with a mixture of red, yellow, blue and orange dyes in various proportions. The dyes possess small molecules and this enables them to pass through the cuticle into the cortex easily and without damaging the scales of the cuticle. They can also be washed off fairly easily.
Semi-Permanent Vegetable Colors: Contain vegetable extracts and natural ingredients. Hence no color is drained from your hair. It is similar to henna, but doesn’t coat the hair. It will stay on the hair’s surface and will last about 8 shampoos.
Do not attempt dyeing hair on your own the first time. Blonde color would be quite agreeable on virgin dark brown hair. Red shade attracts plenty of attention. Moreover, hair holds fast on to red-toned pigments well. But, if you are blonde, you will have to make it two or three shades darker than your natural color. Brown is a very safe choice as it suits most of the ladies. Varying the shade with highlights can lead to a wide range of appearances. Black is the easiest of colors to add because the molecules in black tints are larger and covers various types of hair well.
